How to make your all-important self-care routine into a daily habit rather than a treat.

This past year has taught us a lot, one major thing being that self-care is one of the most important things we need, not only for our physical health, but for our mental wellbeing.

But why is it only now that we’re taking the time to look after ourselves more? Because we have time on our hands right? That doesn’t mean that once were back to ‘normal’ life you should let that slip. It’s time to stop letting ‘normal’ life get in the way, whatever that may mean to you.

I’m going to help you make the steps now to make your all-important self-care routine into a daily habit rather than a treat.

Change your morning routine.

Make the first thing you do when you wake up some sort of self-care exercise. Now, this might mean waking up a bit earlier to fit this in, but I promise you, it will be worth it and your body and mind will both thank you for it. There are lots you can fit in your morning routine without you even realising it. It might be hard to get yourself to get out of bed that hour earlier than you think you need to, but once you change your morning routine, it will become a habit , and I promise you won’t regret it.

Think of three things you are grateful for as soon as you wake up.

Is the sun shining early today? Who in your life makes you happy? Is there anyone you are thankful for? Do you have a job that helps you in life? It doesn’t need to be anything big. Once you start appreciate the smaller things in life, you will realise a shift in your mindset and life will be becoming that but lighter, and that itself is self-care.

Get up, shower, and do your morning skincare routine.

Wake yourself up and let this be the first thing you do every morning. It will boost your mood and make you feel so much better about yourself. Take care of your mind, body and this self-care will do the rest in making your soul happy. Don’t skip anything because you can’t be bothered. Get up and get it done. Enjoy taking this time for yourself. Spend some longer time in a nice hot shower if you want, or even take a bath. The best thing about self-care is that you get to decide what you want to do, and it only benefits yourself. No one else is going to do it for you, so rely on yourself as much as you need to, to get this all done and watch your life change.

Get outside and enjoy nature.

Go for daily walks. I’m sure you’re used to this by now. I know for a lot of people, their daily walk was a time to protect their sanity – quite literally. This shouldn’t mean we should let it slip after lockdown is lifted. Remember how it made you feel just by simply taking a small daily walk alone, and make time to carry on doing them. If you get bored, stick on your favourite playlist or podcast. Just do whatever you need to do to get outside and enjoy your own company.

Exercise.

Exercise benefits both your mental and physical health. You just need to find something you enjoy doing and you’ll fall in love with it. Mix it up. Don’t just do the same workout every day, it will get boring and will become a chore. Challenge yourself to try something new every day for a month. Make it fun and test the waters. It doesn’t have to be long, it can be 10-45 minutes a day. Try yoga, try that 10 minute abs workout, try that Zumba class – try it all!

Make time for your hobby.

Don’t let a global pandemic be the only reason you made time for you hobby. Make time for something you enjoy doing every single day. Whether that be reading a chapter of your book, doing some drawing, baking a new recipe you’ve found, it can be absolutely anything. Just make sure you are living every single day doing things you enjoy. Take the time to enjoy your life. If that means making even more banana bread – then go ahead.

Light a candle.

One of the most simple, but effective ways to help you take some time for yourself and relax is by lighting a candle. Get yourself a scented candle you enjoy, and light it when you’re ready to wind down and take some time for yourself. This can be whenever you want. Enjoy your company and appreciate the things around you. An eco-friendly candle brand that are big on promoting wellbeing and the importance of self-care that I’ve come across is Essence No.1 (Instagram @essence.no1_). Their soy wax candles are ethically sourced, and you plant a tree in the Amazon per purchase alongside their buy one get one tree campaign to help give back! You can purchase candles directly here from EssenceNo.1 and support a small business while you’re at it!
